Steps to Prepare for Commencement
Declare your intent to graduate.
Anyone expecting to complete a degree this semester, or who anticipates completing a degree in August 2015 and would like to attend the May 2015 ceremony should complete the "Apply to Graduate" application in the Student Center (via My UW). Completing the application is the only way to ensure your name appears in the commencement program.
In this application, students will indicate in which term they plan to complete their degree, and select which commencement ceremony they will attend; Ph.D., DMA, and MFA students will list faculty escort information. Master's and doctoral students should also contact their major program to request a degree warrant from the Graduate School.
Master's and doctoral candidates must complete the "Apply to Graduate" application by Friday, April 3.
Undergraduate and professional degree candidates must complete the "Apply to Graduate" application by Friday, April 10.
Orders for academic attire should be made as early as possible on the University Book Store website; carefully review the timeline. Rental orders begin on Monday, February 2. Pick up rented attire at the University Book Store on Wednesday, May 13 or Thursday, May 14. Return attire to the University Book Store at 711 State Street by Tuesday, May 19.
Attend your commencement ceremony.
Two commencement ceremonies will be held in Spring 2015. A single ceremony for all undergraduates and master's students will be held on Saturday, May 16 at 12 noon in Camp Randall Stadium. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 75 minutes. No tickets are required for this ceremony, and there is no limit to the number of guests a graduate may bring. Graduates should be in their seats no later than 11:20 a.m.
The commencement ceremony for Doctoral and MFA candidates will be held on Friday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the Kohl Center. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 2 hours. No tickets are required for this ceremony, and there is no limit to the number of guests a graduate may bring. Graduates should be in their seats no later than 5:00 p.m.
Each School and College will also host a recognition event for their graduates. Many divisions and departments host recognition events as well. More information regarding these events will be posted as it is available.
