Steps to Prepare for Commencement

  1. Declare your intent to graduate.

Anyone expecting to complete a degree this semester, or who completed a degree in August 2014 should complete the "Apply to Graduate" application in the Student Center (via My UW). Completing the application is the only way to ensure your name appears in the commencement program.

In this application, students will indicate in which term they plan to complete their degree, and select which commencement ceremony they will attend; Ph.D., DMA, and MFA students will list faculty escort information. Master's and doctoral students should also contact their major program to request a degree warrant from the Graduate School.

    • Master's and doctoral candidates must complete the "Apply to Graduate" application by Friday, November 7

    • Undergraduate and professional degree candidates must complete the "Apply to Graduate" application by Friday, November 14

For more information, visit the Registrar's Office "Apply to Graduate" webpage. Master's and Ph.D. students can also find information on the Graduate School's "Completing Your Degree" webpage.

  2. Order your commencement attire.

Orders for academic attire should be made as early as possible on the University Book Store website; carefully review the timeline. Pick up rented attire at the University Book Store on Friday, December 19 or Saturday, December 20 and return it to Book Store personnel in the Kohl Center immediately following the ceremony. You may also return attire to the University Book Store at 711 State Street on Monday, December 22.

  3. Attend your commencement ceremony.

Winter commencement for all degree candidates takes place at 10 a.m. in the Kohl Center on Sunday, December 21. Doors open at 8 a.m. and graduates need to be seated no later than 9:40 a.m.

Access to the candidate seating area is via the down staircase at Gate A. Candidates for the various degrees will be seated in sections designated by signs. All candidates should fill out the preprinted forms placed on their chairs. These two-part forms will be used for the reading of names during the presentation of the diploma folders and for providing contact information to receive complimentary photographic proofs of the individual graduates.
