WhatsApp Commencement Information Groups

Use WhatsApp to receive important Commencement information on your smartphone.

What are WhatsApp Commencement information groups?

Join a free WhatsApp Commencement Information Group to get information about Commencement details.

Subscribers receive text messages on their smartphone or mobile device regarding general guest Commencement information, graduate information and/or accessibility
information.

Any UW-Madison Commencement guest or graduate is welcome to join a WhatsApp group.

How to sign up

Follow the instructions below.

  1. Install WhatsApp app on your smartphone or other mobile device
  2. Save the Commencement Information WhatsApp name and phone number in your contact list: (608) 740-0033
  3. Fill out this Google Form

Note: If you get a new phone, mobile device, or phone number, you must install WhatsApp again to continue receiving messages.

How to install WhatsApp on your smartphone

Things you will need: smartphone (iPhone or Android)

On your Apple iPhone:

  1. Find and tap the App Store
  2. Find and tap the Search Icon on the bottom of your screen
  3. Type “WhatsApp Messenger”
  4. Tap the Get button
  5. Once downloaded, find and Tap the WhatsApp Icon on your home screen

On your Android Phone:

  1. Find and tap the Google Play Icon
  2. Find and tap the Search Bar on the top of your screen
  3. Type “WhatsApp Messenger”
  4. Tap the Install Button
  5. Once downloaded, find and Tap the WhatsApp Icon on your home screen

Using WhatsApp safely

The Office of Cybersecurity at UW–Madison stated that there are risks associated with downloading any app on to a cell phone. The Office recommends users take the following additional steps to use WhatsApp safely:

Two-Step Verification

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Tap on the Settings tab
  3. Tap Account
  4. Tap Two-step verification and tap Enable
  5. Enter a six-digit PIN of your choice and type it again to confirm it
  6. If you want WhatsApp to send you an email to reset your PIN when you forget it, type your email address here and follow steps 7 and 8. Tap Skip if you don’t want to add an email address.
  7. Tap Next
  8. Confirm the email address and tap Save or Done

Change WhatsApp group access from “Everyone” to “My Contacts”

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Tap on the Status tab
  3. Tap on Privacy
  4. Tap on “My contacts” and click “Done”

Android

  1. Go to the Google Play Store and search for WhatsApp Messenger
  2. Tap Update next to WhatsApp Messenger

iPhone

  1. Go to the App Store and search for WhatsApp Messenger
  2. Tap Update next to WhatsApp Messenger.

Installing Smartphone Operating System

Please email commence@chancellor.wisc.edu to remove your phone number from the list if you no longer wish to receive WhatsApp messages from us.
